Omnia i910 .NET Compact Framework

There are several different versions of the .Net Compact Framework available for download.  The Omnia i910 is originally equipped with .NET Compact Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 (Version 2.0.7045.00).

My experience may vary from that of others but when I performed a “hard reset” on my Omnia i910 it didn’t install the .Net Compact Framework.  However, it kept the .NET Compact Framework registry entries.  This prevented me from being able to successfully install the .NET CF SP2 bundle.  My goal was to restore my Omnia i910 to an original “Out Of Box” state. (I’m still working this out and will update this entry once I find a fix that I’m satisfied with).

Here are the Microsoft redistributable .NET Compact download locations:

.NET Compact Framework 3.5 (CF) Omnia i910 Installation

In order to install the .NET Compact Framework in your Omnia i910 you’ll need to meet the following requirements:

  • You must be able to successfully sync your PC to the Omnia i910 phone either via Bluetooth or USB.
  • You need a Windows Mobile registry editor

Once you’ve met these requirements follow these steps.

  1. Make sure your phone has successfully synced to your computer by Bluetooth or by using the USB Cable.
  2. Visit the .NET CF 3.5 download link listed above. Download the .msi file to your computer and execute it once the download is finished and follow the onscreen defaults.
  3. A prompt will appear in your phone asking you if you would like to proceed with the installation.  Selected yes, and then select a location.  I recommend you select either “My Device” or “My Storage” (Some have experienced problems when installing into the “Storage Card”
  4. Go to the following registry entry “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\.NETCompactFramework\” and update the “2.0.7045.00″ DWORD value from 1 to 0. Finally, update the “3.5.7283.00″ DWORD value from 0 to 1.  This will ensure that .NET CF 3.5 is used by default by your Windows Mobile OS.
  5. Shut off your phone and turn it back on.  I’m old school and one of the constants I’ve noticed with Microsoft operating systems is that registry entries don’t always… well.. register, unless you’ve performed some kind of reboot.

I hope this helps your successfully install the .NET Compact Framework 3.5 on your Omnia i910.  Special thanks to the guys at Howard Forum for this handy Samsung Omnia i910 Hacks & Tips post.

I love The I-910 but why cant they just pre-install all these software programs that we are going to need to get the most of our phones? You’d think they would jack the price up another $10 or so for the phone and give us a device thats ready for apps…..instead of spending so much time on the web and/or 3rd party software downloads that dont work……guess im just frustrated but…..really now….The basics should be included……(blow’N steam)…..CRS
