I was reviewing my analytics stats and I noticed that some of you find this site when you search for the Samsung Omnia i910 Manual or Guide. So I thought I would make it easy on you guys. There are two version of the Omnia i910 manual available online:

Verizon Omnia Manual

Samsung Omnia i910 Manual (PDF Verizon Copy from the Samsung Website – 32.63MB)

This manual covers the following topics in detail:

Section 1: Getting Started

Section 2: Menu Icons

Section 3: Understanding Your Phone

Section 4: Customization and Navigation

Section 5: Security

Section 6: Call Functions

Section 7: Network Services

Section 8: Entering Text

Section 9: Messaging

Section 10: Contacts

Section 11: Microsoft Mobile Applications

Section 12: Multimedia

Section 13: Web

Section 14: Personal Organizer

Section 15: Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Services

Section 16: Synchronization

Section 17: Tools

Section 18: Changing Your Settings

Section 19: Health and Safety Information

Section 20: Warranty Information

Index

Samsung Omina i910 Online Guide

Samsung Omnia i910 Guide (SWF Flash Version from the Verizon website)

Now this one I tried to embed on this page but Verizon makes it impossible to distribute because the file is set up to pull all its components from the root of its page. Anyways, here’s a screenshot:

It just about covers the same topics as the PDF manual but include neat animations and videos that might help those like me who are more hands on and rather not read a bunch of technical jargon.

I may go through the Verizon CD and see if there are any other goodies worth showcasing here later today.

I plan to post several screen captures of software available and compatible with the Samsung Omnia i910 so I thought I would start by first telling you about a good screen capture application, how it works and a few sample screen shots. This is a handy tool for anyone looking to take screen captures of apps they want to share and discuss or of problems and error messages. Also, if you’re planning to talk about features of the phone as I plan to it can be of great use to show people pictures of exactly what you’re talking about.

The problem I’ve found with some screen capture software for the Windows Mobile platform is that they are not meant to be used with touch screen devices. The problem is caused by the lack of buttons on the Omnia but alas I found a great and free app.

Ilium Software Screen Capture for Windows Mobile

On the left side you will notice a sample of how the Ilium screen capture software works. The software is completely free and works well with the Samsung Omnia i910. In order to download the software you will need to scroll to the bottom of the page and check off the “I have read and understood all the documentation on this page.” box and click on download. Once you do this you will be taken to another page that gives you 3 download options. The first option extracts the package and uses the Sync Center to install the application from your computer to your phone when connected via USB. I prefer the second option which is labeled “Pocket PC (touchscreen device) .cab file” .

This is the .CAB file that you can copy to your Omnia storage and then install from within your mobile device by using the “File Explorer”. When installing you can choose the “location to install” between “Device”, “\My Storage” and “\Storage Card”. I prefer to use “\My Storage” as this is the non-removable 8 gig storage provided with your Omnia. If you install something in the “\Storage Card” you will always need to have that same Micro SD card inside your device or copy it to a new one if you upgrade size. I never install anything on the “Device” simply because it doesn’t have a lot of space and I fear that the free space in this drive is also used by the system to cache memory for other running applications.

Once the application is installed you can use it right away without needing to configure anything. The App1 key is the main menu key located on the top right corner of the phone:

Once the application is running you can “X” out of it and go about running any other program. When you want to capture a screen simply press the App1 key. The capture files are stored your \Device\My Documents\ folder by default. The default file name is “sshot000.bmp” and continues in ascending order as you take more screen shots (sshot001, sshot002, etc). From what I can see there is no way to change this default, has anyone succeeded in changing the default directories or file names?

Here are some sample screen schots which are the same size of the screen resolution (240×400):

The only problem I’ve ran into is being unable to capture screen shots when I’m in camera mode. Does anyone have a workaround for this?

The team at modaco, more specifically user BamDastard, has released a new Samsung Omnia i910 Rom. Here are the links to the rom files:

Samsung Omnia i910 Rom v2.3

Samsung Omnia i910 Rom Instructions (PDF)

The instructions they included on the thread (which is also linked above) is for an earlier version. Which is why it lists “UMDL_OMNIA_v1.7.exe” as one of the file requirements. Just know that whenever the instruction files references “UMDL_OMNIA_v1.7.exe” they really mean “UMDL_OMNIA_v2.3.exe” which is the file included in the rom .RAR.

Moving on.

You will also need Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5 and the SAMSUNG-Mobile-USB-DRIVER(4.40.7.0)-v1.6 which I’ve linked here. By the way, I pulled the Samsung USB Driver straight from the Verizon VZAccess Manager CD that came with in the Omnia box.

Now the instruction doesn’t make mention of the Broadcom Bluetooth Driver but I recommend installing it anyways. I’ve never been able to fully get my phone to tether with my laptop without it. (By tethering I mean being able to connect my laptop to the internet by using the COM port of my phone)

The rest of the instructions are pretty self explanatory. I must advice that you should only flash your ROM if you ready to accept the risk of turning your phone in to a brick. Based on the responses from the forum few people have had problems but I just want to be clear that this upgrade is AT YOUR OWN RISK. Once you’ve flashed your rom you cannot restore your original copy unless you’ve backed it up.

I plan on trying out this rom just as soon as I find a reliable way to backup and restore the original rom on my phone. Once I do of course I will post it here .

I’m adding extra stuff here to show mouse things.
